I pay my respects to their Elders past and present. Wendy Catling (she/her) is a first generation Australian visual artist working primarily in photography. Her practice investigates social and cultural alienation as it is mediated through personal experience and memory. Engaging with archives and post-documentary methods, she examines human relationships through the material and textual traces of everyday life. Her work considers how environments and inscriptions articulate experiences of disconnection or trauma. Catling works across alternative and digital photography, photobooks and installation. Wendy completed her MA - Photography in 2020 at Photography Studies College, Melbourne. Her first photobook, Nightshade, was published in 2022 earning critical recognition. In 2024 Nightshade was selected for an exhibition of Australian women photographers at the Victoria &amp; Albert Museum in London and was purchased for their permanent collection. In that year it received a highly commended award in the 2024 Australia-NZ Photobook Award and was also shortlisted in the Singapore International Photography Festival photobook award. Since 2001 Wendy has worked as an art and photography educator. Her early career in London during the 1980s - 90s&nbsp; included textile design, stage management, theatre administration, and sound and lighting technician for comedy improvisers. Wendy volunteers with victims of domestic violence and as a gallery tour guide. Wendy’s works have been shown in the UK, USA, Kuwait, Singapore and Australia and are in collections at Victoria and Albert Museum, the National Gallery of Australia, Warrnambool Art Gallery, and in private collections. She lives on the outskirts of Naarm, (Melbourne), surrounded by native bushland reserves with her partner who is a sound designer, and multimedia artist. As striking as these images and words are, the thing that strikes me most about this book is its generosity. Ironically, the generosity comes from the very careful and paired back approach. For a long time these soft-focus images of my late father’s strong hands holding my siblings and myself in their embrace remained in a drawer in my studio - too painful to confront. The fatherly tenderness captured in them seems to belong to another reality, recorded in family albums, but not in memory.&nbsp; Gestures of affection that hold conflicted feelings for children whose fathers, like mine, abuse their mother. What has not been documented in our family albums is the violence and coersion that he exerted. Or the effect it had on his children.&nbsp; The events which are not recorded by family photographs are equally or more important than events which have been documented. Trauma that abusive fathers have suffered in their own lives, the culture that they absorb, the social norms and privileges, or lack of, that they inherit or are forced into. None of these can be seen in a family photograph which are usually taken to capture a significant moment: an outing, a celebration, a gathering. What photographs of families do capture is optimism, hopefulness for the possibilities of happy family life; possibilities that some fathers are not capable of fulfilling.The process of selecting, scanning,&nbsp;cropping, and enlarging from analogue prints found in my family archives, involves intense reflection. For me it also coincided with research into the causes of family violence and a growing realisation of complexity in human relationships, human histories. The resulting images speak to the strange power of the snapshot: the freezing of fleeting, emotionally loaded gestures. The blurred forms and grainy texture of over sized prints become clearer with distance—a trick of the photographic image, whose truths may only emerge through the lens of time and re-examination. I have always been troubled by confused feelings about fatherly love. Is traumatising children the action of a loving parent? The ability of family photographs to convince us that abusive partners can be loving fathers may be a profound shortcoming. My experience as a single mother working long hours and commuting to a distant suburb made me acutely aware of how easily isolation can occur despite physical proximity to others. Conversations with my elderly mother and with neighbours who are immigrants, widows, carers, in dysfunctional relationships, living with health challenges or simply living alone revealed the diverse and often hidden forms of loneliness shaping suburban life.&nbsp; Turning to online neighbourhood communities, I became attentive to the ways my neighbours reach out to strangers through social media — through tentative or assertive posts, coded requests for help, expressions of frustration, and small gestures of care. Yet when digital communication replaces embodied interaction it diminishes our capacity to tolerate differences and to feel empathy for one another. Photographing visual traces of anonymous inhabitants and gathering fragments of conversations shared between people unknown to one another led to this project. Beneath the surface of an unexceptional urban neighbourhood, I sensed undercurrents of collective estrangement. I was not alone in feeling alone. Dear Neighbour examines how disconnection is encoded in suburban streetscapes and in the disembodied voices of digital exchange. The installation included a backdrop of shadowy figures printed onto industrial screening mesh, with scattered junkmail and Facebook community noticeboard quotes. It also included a beautiful soundscape by my partner, Peter Miller, which you may hear on the artist walk through video HERE Peter says about his soundscape:My sound work oddly.shaky.land is created from multiple recordings I've collected of the ambient background noise in two specific locations: the Ringwood Eastlink underpass and the Eastland shopping complex, places that I find myself passing through on an almost daily basis. Even though those of us who live in cities hear this kind of ubiquitous ambience all the time, we mostly don’t notice it due to our brain's remarkable ability to filter it from our awareness. To emphasise the unique qualities of these soundscapes, I’ve layered the recordings of each location multiple times to distil their essence, and then ‘played’ the resulting sound blends as if they were musical instruments. Framing them in a musical manner like this allows me to re-discover them in terms of their purest form, a kind of hollow swirling that evokes a spectral nostalgic sense of motion. of Melbourne (Naarm), Australia, we have endured over 200 days of quarantine since the start of the pandemic in 2020. During the past year we have been able to successfully suppress Covid virus transmissions and deaths to zero after a 4-month intense lockdown. “Double doughnuts!” we begin to boast. Then new variations make that goal increasingly difficult. Meanwhile we continue to live under a curfew and with limited reasons to leave home inside a restricted zone around our homes. At the time of making these works that zone is 10 km. “Dictator-Dan”&nbsp; tabloid headlines and graffitti, protests, conspiracy theories, anti-vaxxers and mask refusers - all indicators of national stress points - break the bubble of my lefty arty social media milieu and the superficially benign surface of my middle-class neighbourhood. Supporting or opposing the strong strategies employed by our state government to limit virus infections has created a culture war between neighbours and other states. I am in the fortunate position of having few other concerns apart from the health and safety of my loved ones, but when the daily news of increasing case numbers, aggressive right-wing protests and lack of vision by our conservative federal government become too much for me, I need an outlet. I find a phone app, one of many that had sprung up during the pandemic, to indicate a circle of various distances from any location. Then I research compass points and plot the 16 cardinal points that are 10km from my house. In the guise of exercise – one of six authorised reasons to leave home - I travel to the boundary of my restricted travel zone to document the limits of my freedom. On my journey, I listen to a podcast in which scientists and astronauts discuss the isolation of space travel and future quests to establish colonies on inhospitable planets to escape from global environmental disaster. As I travel the short distance to the extremities of my current existence, I have a creeping sense that all assumptions of the future are being tossed in the air, upended. That resistance to uncomfortable change is futile, in a world that will never return to cosy certainties, if there ever were any. Driving around the 10 km circle limit, I point my camera over the border at every one of the 16 points. The result is a set of images which represent looking forward and outward from physical, political, and psychological boundaries. relationship with my father. Over twenty tumultuous years, she endured profound hardship, frequently moving home to escape my father’s stalking, violence, and coersive control. The pattern of domestic violence, marked by my father’s charming public facade, and private cruelty, is symbolised by the black nightshade - an attractive but toxic plant. Despite the relentless pressure of family care and life instability, my mother found sanctuary and personal power in her passions for gardening and environmental regeneration. Since their separation in the 1980s and my father’s death in a car accident, she has dedicated herself to volunteering in suburban natural bush reserves, tirelessly removing environmental weeds to promote native plant growth. Now in her 90s she maintains a beautiful, meticulously weed-free garden. This project parallels my mother’s battle against weeds with her resistance to domestic abuse and coercive control. In creating this work, I mimicked my father’s obsessive stalking by tracking environmental weeds in our area and scrutinizing neglected family photographs. My conflicted role as a traumatised witness and confidante to both parents is conveyed through the relationships between contemporary and archival images and documents. Through this process complexity and ambiguity are revealed, aiming to repair a traumatic history. Undercurrents of metaphorical horrors lie beneath superficially benign townscapes. These are my memories of trying to understand and survive a violent family life. For each hand made unique cyanotype I have reclaimed the intense quality of light from my childhood in an Australian country town during the 1960s in a process that I liken to ‘fixing’ the ghostly shadows of my past.&nbsp; Blazing summer sunshine has been filtered through symbolic objects and digital film positives of significant locations where I grew up, onto cyanotype sensitised archival paper. Afterimage was produced during the summer of 2016-17. I was exploring the place in my imagination where visual perception and memory coincide. The compositions were informed by the shapes seen inside closed eyelids after staring at a brightly lit scene. Filtering blazing summer sunlight onto sensitised archival paper, these afterimage visualisations reference childhood bowers seen during daylight reveries and later revisited in adult late night insomniac states. They are visions of safe places to escape anxiety and danger. I reinterpret my childhood imaginary world, playing amongst ancient tangled jasmine vines, lying hidden amongst weeds on a vacant block gazing at the sky or staring up through seaweed in a rockpool dream. These are the magic and dramatic places of the subconscious which began while navigating a dysfunctional family life.
